Single acting cylinders need a mechanical medium in order to retract or extend the rod. In the diagram it shows it using an internal spring to project the rod out and air pressure to bring it back in. Also, if the arrangement of the spring and air pressure port, it could do this process in reverse. The seal in this diagram is a lip seal. The piston cup seal supports a very flexible seal so that it can handle large clearance while at a low pressure. This seal is very good at trapping in the injected lubricants while being placed in small reservoirs.

There is a gland extension the offers protection so the seal doesn’t get crushed while the rod is extended. And it helps with preventing the air inlet being blocked so that it want over travel the lip seal. And there is a piston nut that doesn’t let it crush the return spring.
