Of course we all know when the hydraulics in the cylinders start to go out, makes our jobs alot harder. It is inevitable the seals will go out from everyday wear and tear, age and seals thinning out. Just don’t use it til you have erosion going on, will cost you more in the long run. Here are some things to look for ahead of it going out.

On the piston seal you can if it is gong bad by the barrel getting larger. It will erode or will become missing all together. You will need to replace the barrel or the whole cylinder. By replacing smaller parts maybe a way of fixing your problem, should you go that route but it want last long.

Telling if the rod seal needs replacing look for the guide bush to be worn out or even the rod being bent. When this happens it means the weight of the rod is on the pathway of the seal, thus making it impossible to work. In order for it to work properly, you will need to see what the true culprit is before putting on a new rod.

By looking over the rod, you can tell is one side of the rod doesn’t look shiny that is because the rod is bent. Straightening a rod is key when repairing it. You can tell the straightness of a rod by putting it on a roller machine. The run out of .5 mm per linear meter is a good rule of thumb to go by. And you can straighten a rod on a press, make sure to be careful not to harm the chrome plate.
