On models M23 and M35 the pumps have a direct displacement control DDC system.
The M46 pumps have a servo control with a either a manual displacement control MDC, a HDC hydraulic displacement control or a EDC electrical displacement control.
Which ever one you choose it gives a positive smooth control of the transmission in either direction.
